| | | Loyola College communication students enrolled in Journalism 1 have embarked on a project this fall for St. Mary of the Assumption School. The Loyola students sign up to write articles that feature different enrichment programs offered by Loyola volunteers on a weekly basis. Working with Amy Maher, Coordinator for the St. Mary's/Loyola Partnership, students develop their stories by talking with St. Mary volunteers, teachers, and children. The students have found the project a rewarding experience that fits into course objectives. The project “continues a tradition of Communication students working with St. Mary's, reflecting Loyola's ethos that helping others is the best way to learn,” noted Communication Department Chair Dr. Russell J. Cook. Click the links below to read the articles the Loyola students have written.
More than 150 alumni and friends of St. Mary of the Assumption school gathered on June 7 for the school's first annual Bids4Kids Dinner and Silent Auction which generated more than $19,000 in funds for the tuition assistance program. Mrs. Karen VanDusen received the Archbishop's Awared for Teaching Excellence at the annual Archidocese of Baltimore Teacher Recognition Dinner on April 10, 2008.
Mrs. VanDusen, an eighth-grade teacher, was honored for her hard work an dedication to students at St. Mary School for 17 years and for other leadership experiences. Mrs. Barbara Naudain, a sixth-grade teacher, was also honored for her 30 years of service to the mission of Catholic Education. She has spent 27 of those years at St. Mary school. We are so grateful for these teachers' commitment and dedication to the success of our children at St. Mary's! Fifteen Ansel Adams wanna-bes in grades six to eight had their photography professionally framed and displayed in an exhibit that opened on April 12 at the Loyola Clinical Centers in Belvedere Square. The exhibit, which will run for a few more weeks, includes 32 portraits and abstracts.
This exhibit is the final product of the Tuesday afternoon Photography Club offered through St. Mary's partnership with Loyola College. Loyola students in Introduction to Photography, a service-learning course, spent one hour a week sharing what they learned in class with St. Mary's students. They introduced club members to the basics of photography, including aperture, shutter speed, quality of light, color and point of view. The experience was rewarding for the College students and the faculty as well as the Photography Club members.
"The opportunity to work with St. Mary's students has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had while teaching at Loyola College," says Dan Schlapbach, associate professor of Fine Arts, who oversaw the workhop. "Every week my students share the skills they've recently acquired with the students at St. Mary's. This process helps my students enrich their comprehension of the concepts."
Our special thanks to professor Schlapbach for his dedication to our students!
